Repairing torn tendons and muscles

Tendon and Muscle Tear Repair

Tendon and muscle injuries are common in sports, accidents, or due to repetitive strain. They occur when muscle fibers or tendons are partially or completely torn, leading to pain, weakness, and sometimes loss of function in the affected area.

1️⃣ Causes of Tendon and Muscle Tears

  • Sudden or forceful movements during sports

  • Direct trauma or falls

  • Overuse of a muscle or tendon over time

  • Degenerative changes with aging

2️⃣ Symptoms

  • Sudden sharp pain at the injury site

  • Swelling or bruising

  • Weakness or inability to move the affected joint

  • A “popping” sound at the moment of complete tear in some cases

3️⃣ Treatment Options

🔹 Non-Surgical Treatment

  • Rest and avoidance of stress on the injured muscle or tendon

  • Cold compresses to reduce swelling

  • Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications

  • Gradual strengthening exercises with physical therapy

🔹 Surgical Treatment

  • Direct repair of the torn tendon or muscle using surgical sutures

  • In severe cases, tendon grafting may be used to reconstruct large tears

  • Arthroscopic (minimally invasive) surgery can be performed for certain tendons (e.g., shoulder or knee) to reduce recovery time

4️⃣ Goals of Treatment

  • Restore normal strength and movement of the affected muscle or joint

  • Prevent long-term weakness or joint stiffness

  • Enable a safe return to daily activities or sports

5️⃣ Recovery Time

  • Depends on the location and severity of the tear

  • May range from a few weeks for minor injuries to several months after surgery

  • Intensive physiotherapy is essential for full recovery
